Dear LMU Community:
I am deeply saddened to tell you that Rita Arthur, R.S.H.M., Ph.D., passed away today at the age of 84 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Sister Rita served as an LMU trustee since 2006 and was chair of the Board of Trustee’s Academic Affairs Committee.
Sister Rita served as the R.S.H.M non-governmental organization delegate to the United Nations, and was a member of the Social Development, HIV/AIDS, and Eradication of Poverty Day Planning committees, the U.N. /N.G.O. Department of Public Information Executive Committee and the Sub-Committee on Poverty. She also served as a contributor to an NGO Higher Education Outreach Program.
Sister Rita was also a trustee and former French teacher of Marymount Manhattan College in New York, a board director for the Partnership of Global Justice and a former director of the American Institute for Foreign Studies. She was an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities.
A Vigil Service will take place Wednesday, Jan. 21, and a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Jan. 22, at Marymount Convent in Tarrytown, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary Retirement Fund, 441 N. Garfield Avenue, Montebello, CA 90640.
